Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy

Client: On behalf of  client Screen Shot 2014-12-29 at 7.39.29 AMApplied Medical Visualizations (Medvis), Focal Concept renegotiated and restructured Medvis’  patent license agreement withIMG_0235 General Electric.  Result: Nearly doubled the amount of revenue Medvis had hoped to recover as part of the license restructuring.

Business Creation: Focal Concept’s founder, Brian Rivette, was a founding partner and president of A2D, L.P. (general partner of Ronald A. Katz Technology Licensing, L.P.) for over 15 years. The company, based in Los Angeles, has been described as one of the most financially successful licensing entities in the United States.  Result: During that time, the company generated well in excess of US $1 billion in licensing revenues from hundreds of companies, including a large number of the Fortune 100.


Smart, Efficient Growth

IMG_4152Management Experience: Focal Concept’s founder was the vice president of Marketing and Government Affairs, and part of the founding executive team for Call Interactive (now First Data Voice Services) a joint venture between AT&T and American Express Information Services Corp.

Client Exit: Focal Concept is the exclusive representative in the sale of a medical device company, with significant IP, working in the diabetes management area.

Client Reputation: Focal Concept worked with the chair of a university department to improve the department’s national ranking. A competitive scan of other departments was performed. In collaboration with the chair, Focal Concept identified key messages related to the excellent teaching, research and overall scholarship occurring in the department. To reinforce the messages, Focal Concept worked with a videographer and a student in crafting a series of short videos which were promoted in e-news and on the department website.

Expertise: Focal Concept’s founder has been a guest lecturer at the University of Utah in the New Ventures Clinic (run by the College of Law), the Community Leadership Scholars Program (Honors College), the BioWorld and BioInnovate courses (Department of Bioengineering).

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 6.52.20 PMCurrent Client: MVPortfolios (MVP), a patent productization company set up to assist universities and inventors with their mobile applications and smartphone technology IP.  Focal Concept started advising their founder and President prior to the company going public in March 2014 and continues to advise the senior management team while acting as MVP’s Foreign Agent Officer in the UK and outside of the United States. Past Client: Focal Concept’s founder was a managing partner at MS-TECH, focusing on marketing and development, particularly in the development of solar pump drip irrigation systems for use in the MENA region as well as having a variety of other development projects in Morocco.


Global Projects

photo28University Advisory Experience: Focal Concept’s founder, Brian Rivette, is a past member of the International Advisory Board to the University of Utah and a current member of the Global Strategy task force later called the Thomson Initiative.

Management Experience: Focal Concept’s founder was a district manager within AT&T International’s strategy development department.

Economic Development Project: Since 2006, Focal Concept’s founder has been a program director for the University of Utah’s economic development program in Barikuma, Ghana as part of the University’s Global Health Initiative.

Academic Mentoring: Focal Concept’s founder was a mentor in the University of Utah’s International Leadership Academy, Honors College for three years running as well as a guest lecturer in School of Medicine’s Public Health Development Think Tank and the University’s BioWorld Course (Department of Bioengineering).

COH2Past Client: Focal Concept assisted the College of Health (formerly the Rural Health Training School) in Kintampo, Ghana, West Africa in their planning for expansion onto 3,000 acres of newly acquired land and the planning a new city.

Past Client: Focal Concept advised the Global Health Initiative (GHI) at the University of Utah in how best to maximize exposure for an international public health award, including creating an integrated Public Health and Clinic Health website to articulate the history, principles, activities and scope of the work being done by the GHI.

Past Client: Focal Concept has worked with Zahra Charity to create access to rehabilitative care for patients in Morocco who are suffering from neurological diseases such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and deficits resulting from neo-natal asphyxia.

Past Client: Focal Concept created a marketing campaign and website for a political candidate in Ghana.
